The federal government invested R$ 42 billion in infrastructure projects in the past year throughout the country, according to Acting Minister of Planning, Budget and Management Dyogo Oliveira. On Wednesday (11 January), President Michel Temer and cabinet members with infrastructure-related portfolios took stock of the sector's actions in 2016 and began planning for 2017 and 2018.

“We focused resources on ensuring the timely payment of works," said Minister Oliveira. According to the minister, all ministries at the meeting showed that the payments for the works under their responsibility were on time.

The National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT), for example, had closed 2015 with R$ 3 billion in payments in arrears; now, the situation was normalised. “We developed a plan that is consistent with our capacity to keep up with payments, ensuring all construction works are on schedule and, therefore, gain credibility," he said.

The minister added that in February, the federal government will issue the first report on the 1,600 unfinished projects that will be completed throughout 2017 and 2018.
